Universal or Ethnic Religion?
A universal religion is a religion that is world wide, like Christianity. An ethnic religion is when a religion is only practiced by a group of individuals. Shintoism is an example of an ethnic religion. Its only followers are in Japan and a small number are in China and South Korea. As you can see in the choropleth (a map where a darker shade of color means a bigger population) to the left, Shinto followers occupy all of Japan.
